On Tuesday, Donald Trump announced that he was suspending the implementation of new 50% tariffs on Canadian products for three days. This decision follows negotiations between Washington and Ottawa, as the White House had threatened to impose these tariffs starting Wednesday, August 19.

The tariffs, which were set to apply to the equivalent of $20 billion in Canadian imports, had initially been announced in mid-July. Canadian exporters feared significant economic consequences if these measures were implemented, which could impact their revenue.

According to sources, Mark Carney stated that substantial progress had been made in the discussions, but he also emphasized that there was still considerable work to be done before a definitive agreement could be reached. The talks have therefore been extended, allowing Canada to gain a brief reprieve.

RFI reported that this three-day reprieve was granted less than two hours before the scheduled implementation of the tariffs. This decision has been interpreted as an attempt by Donald Trump to secure new concessions from Canada.

Other sources indicate that while Trump mentioned a potential agreement, it does not yet represent a complete resolution of the trade tensions between the two countries. Discussions will continue beyond this temporary suspension of the tariffs.

The situation remains fluid, with varied reactions from the Canadian side in response to this latest announcement, and a reminder that the threat of new tariffs remains on the table as long as a definitive agreement is not reached.
