The ongoing dispute over Cauvery water continues to escalate as the Karnataka government faces scrutiny after claims by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that water was released late at night from Krishnarajasagara (KRS) reservoir. This situation has raised significant concerns among farmers and political groups in Mandya, particularly as the state prepares to legally challenge the directive for water release.

On August 3, Tamil Nadu filed a plea with the Supreme Court, asserting that it was not receiving its allocated share of Cauvery water during a year marked by inadequate rainfall. The state government indicated that both the volume recommended for release by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee and the actual water provided by Karnataka fell short of its needs.

In response to Tamil Nadu's application, the Supreme Court has directed Karnataka to comply with the water release requirements. The court's hearing will take place on August 17, a week after the latest compliance directive was issued to assess the situation.

Officials have suggested that a limited release of water could be interpreted as an effort to adhere to the court's order while navigating the ongoing legal complexities. This has sparked further debate among involved parties, including those representing agricultural interests and political entities.

The legal battle continues as Karnataka emphasizes its commitment to addressing the water-sharing issues while Tamil Nadu seeks to ensure that its water entitlements are met amid challenging climatic conditions.
