Davao Flood Control Funding Questioned in Proposed 2027 Budget
Concerns arise as funding for Davao's flood control projects is reportedly absent from the 2027 budget.

In the proposed 2027 budget, funding for flood control projects in the Davao region is reportedly left blank, raising questions about the allocation of resources for this vital infrastructure. ACT Teachers Representative Antonio Tinio highlighted this gap, suggesting that it may indicate a lack of budgetary provision for flood control in the region. This oversight could leave Davao vulnerable to flooding, especially considering its recurring weather-related challenges.
Senator Panfilo Lacson has also expressed concerns regarding the effectiveness of flood control spending across the Philippines. He pointed out that from 2011 to 2025, the government has allocated nearly P1.939 trillion for the Department of Public Works and Highways' flood management program. Despite this significant investment, issues with flooding persist in many areas, leading to questions about the impact of these expenditures.

Lacson emphasized the need for accountability regarding the government's flood control measures, as he shared images of ongoing flooding despite substantial financial allocations. His remarks suggest a disconnect between budgetary provisions and actual improvements in flood management.
The discussion around flood control funding comes amid broader conversations about the need for resilience against climate change impacts. Questions remain about how effectively the existing allocations have been utilized to enhance infrastructure and community preparedness in flood-prone regions.
