DGArtes opens competition for Venice Architecture Biennale 2027
The Directorate-General for the Arts will select a project from three proposals to represent Portugal at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2027.

The Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes) announced the opening of a competition to select the project that will represent Portugal at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2027. The competition features three finalist proposals that will compete for the official representation. The selected proposals include "Analog Twins," "Mãos ao Chão," and "Matéria Viva," as reported by various sources.
The winner of the competition will be announced in October 2023. DGArtes will provide financial support of 500,000 euros to the chosen project. This funding aims to facilitate the realization of a project that reflects the trends and innovations of contemporary architecture.
The final projects were developed by teams made up of various professionals. The teams that submitted proposals include Alice Clanet-Hallard, Edgar Brito, Francisco Lobo, and Romea Muryn; as well as Joanna Alice Helm, Remígio Van Eyes Chilaule, and Samuel de Brito Gonçalves; in addition to Helena Botelho, according to Público.

The Venice Architecture Biennale is one of the most significant events on the international architecture calendar, providing a platform for countries to showcase their interpretations of architectural themes. Portugal's participation aims to strengthen the national presence in this context.
The opening of the competition has been well received in the national architectural community, with various associations and professionals expressing interest in the projects to be presented. The selection process is underway with criteria focused on innovation and the cultural relevance of the proposals.
With the approval of financial support and the selection of proposals, DGArtes hopes that the chosen work will not only represent Portuguese architecture but also provoke reflections on architectural practice at a global level.
