Eleven French nationals arrested in Thailand for cannabis trafficking
Eleven French nationals have been detained in Thailand since this summer for transporting cannabis, which they believed was part of a legal scheme.
Since the beginning of the summer, at least eleven young French nationals have been imprisoned in Thailand, accused of transporting cannabis. According to multiple sources, these individuals were allegedly trapped by a 'plan' proposed on social media platforms, particularly on Snapchat, inviting them to carry suitcases in exchange for financed vacations.
The sale of cannabis is tolerated in Thailand, but only for medical use. Recent changes in legislation, in June 2025, tightened the rules by prohibiting sales and consumption for recreational purposes, complicating the situation for the detainees.
Thai authorities have begun to intensify their control over drug trafficking, particularly that of cannabis, which has led to the arrest of the French nationals found in possession of drugs in their luggage.
This case highlights the potential risks of online scams targeting travelers, as several testimonies indicate that these young people were lured by the promise of free vacations, without considering the legality of the proposed activities.
