Kiala launches to publish Black authors and reject segregation

Publisher Kiala was founded by Elga Fontes, focusing on the publication of Black authors without addressing racial issues.

The Kiala publishing house was recently created with the aim of publishing works by Black authors. According to reports, founder Elga Fontes decided to launch the publisher after reviewing the catalogs of various Portuguese publishing houses. This analysis revealed the need for a platform dedicated exclusively to Black authors.

Kiala aims to operate without being restricted to race-related themes, choosing instead to focus on the literary diversity that Black authors can offer. The project seeks to give visibility and voices to writers who are often overlooked in the publishing landscape.

Fontes states that the new publisher does not seek to promote segregation, but rather to value the literature of Black authors within the broader context of literary production in Portugal. The initiative arose in response to a perceived gap in the publishing market.

Kiala promises to publish works that reflect diverse experiences and perspectives, thereby contributing to the cultural and literary plurality of the country. The publisher indicates that new titles and authors are expected to be presented soon.
