PQ rules out a referendum while Trump is president
The Parti Québécois announces that no referendum on independence will take place while Donald Trump remains in office.

The leader of the Parti Québécois, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, stated that no referendum on the independence of Quebec will be organized as long as Donald Trump is President of the United States. This decision aims to reassure voters amid current geopolitical uncertainties.
According to several sources, PSPP maintains its commitment to consult Quebecers about their desire for independence during the first term of a Péquiste government, but this will not happen before January 2029, at the end of Trump's presidency.
RTBF and Le Journal de Montréal report that PSPP's position is clear: a referendum will not take place as long as Trump, viewed as an unpredictable political figure, is in power.
Le Monde noted that the Péquiste leader emphasized the importance of not allowing the debate on the political future of the province to be influenced by American politics or the actions of the American president.
This announcement has sparked reactions both within and outside the party. Members of the Parti Québécois appear divided over the strategy to adopt in light of a political calendar that could determine the opportune moment for a public consultation.
Finally, as reported by La Presse, PSPP has set a deadline for a potential consultation, indicating that this decision will be reassessed in the geopolitical context of 2029 or 2030.
