The U.S. Supreme Court has decided not to rehear President Donald Trump’s appeal concerning the $5 million verdict awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll. The case stems from a jury's finding that Trump sexually abused Carroll in the mid-1990s and subsequently defamed her.

This is the second time the Supreme Court has rejected Trump’s request for reconsideration of its previous decision, maintaining the jury's ruling. Trump's legal team had argued for the court to review their denial of the appeal, but the justices declined to do so on Monday.

The verdict, which was reached in 2022, involved allegations made by Carroll against Trump regarding his conduct in a New York City department store. Following the original court's decision, Trump faced a substantial financial judgment that he paid shortly after the Supreme Court's initial refusal to take the case.

Trump's attorneys criticized Carroll's case as a 'witch hunt' and a 'hoax,' but the Supreme Court’s rejection of the appeal allows the lower court's ruling to stand. The decision indicates that the justices found no merit in Trump's legal arguments to revisit the matter.

Legal experts noted that it is unusual for the Supreme Court to grant rehearings, yet Trump's team pursued this route in an effort to overturn a verdict that they contested on constitutional grounds.

The ongoing implications of this case are significant as it relates to both the legal challenges facing Trump and the broader discussions about accountability and claims of defamation in high-profile cases.
