The Risks of Zolpidem, the Most Widely Used Sleep Medication in Brazil
Anvisa has revised regulations for the sale of zolpidem, a commonly used drug for treating insomnia.

On June 29, 2022, Dr. Vitor Piva, 34, struggled to sleep after a shift at a hospital in São Paulo. According to Piva, the construction of a new subway line in the city was causing loud noise, making it difficult for him to get the necessary rest before another shift that same night.
As part of his routine when unable to sleep, Piva chose to take a zolpidem tablet, the most widely consumed sedative in Brazil. The use of this medication is common among those dealing with insomnia, but its efficacy and safety have been subjects of debate.

Anvisa, the agency that regulates the sale of medications in Brazil, recently decided to revise the guidelines regarding zolpidem, tightening its commercialization. This change aims to enhance the safety of patients using the medication for insomnia, considering the potential risks associated with its use.
The discussion surrounding the risks of zolpidem highlights concerns about the dependence the medication can cause, as well as its possible contraindications. Anvisa's measure reflects a movement to ensure that zolpidem is used cautiously and informedly by those needing treatment.
