Vijay Government Revokes Order Preventing Student Protests in Tamil Nadu
The Tamil Nadu government quickly withdrew an order aimed at preventing students from participating in protests after backlash.

The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister Vijay, has revoked an order that sought to prevent students from joining protests organized by Left-wing parties and the Tamil Nadu Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The order, which was issued by the Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE), instructed principals of Government Arts and Science Colleges, as well as Colleges of Education, to take appropriate coordinated action against student participation in protests and demonstrations.
Minutes after the directive was issued, it was withdrawn amid public outcry. The rapid retraction highlights the contentious nature of the government’s stance on student activism.
The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) welcomed the withdrawal, characterizing it as a victory for the democratic rights of students. They expressed relief that students would not be barred from participating in protests that voiced their concerns.

The initial order had called for steps to ensure that students and youth were not involved in demonstrations, drawing significant criticism from various student groups and civil society organizations.
The Vijay government’s swift reversal of the directive raises questions about the decision-making process behind such orders and the government's approach to managing dissent within educational institutions.
