24-hour strike at Lisbon Metro starting Wednesday
Lisbon Metro will be suspended due to a 24-hour strike called by unions. Service is expected to resume on Thursday morning.

The Lisbon Metro (ML) announced that operations will be suspended starting at 5:00 AM on October 14 due to a 24-hour strike called by the unions representing the workers. Metro stations will be closed during this period, with service expected to resume at 6:30 AM on October 15.
Six union organizations justified the strike, stating that the current situation at the metro is due to "staff shortages, delays in recruitment and training, continued reliance on overtime and extended shifts." Additionally, the unions denounce the "lack of effective responses to the pressure and constraints" faced by the workers.
The unions indicated that a previously reached agreement in April is not being upheld by the administration, contributing to the decision to proceed with the strike. The administration of the Lisbon Metro deems the strike "disproportionate," given that negotiations are ongoing to address the raised issues.

In response to the strike call, the company informed the public through a statement released on Tuesday, warning that metro services would be significantly affected. The ML characterized the situation as a direct consequence of the actions of the unions representing their workers.
The 24-hour stoppage is raising concerns among users of public transport, who rely on the metro to travel around the city. The lack of alternative transportation options may complicate citizens' mobility during the strike period.
The unions reiterated that the workers' struggle is due to dissatisfaction with working conditions, the need for a significant increase in staff, and a firm commitment to implementing established agreements. The situation continues to be closely monitored by the media.
