A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Panama on Friday, October 9, with its epicenter near Tonosí. The seismic event caused damage to various structures, including the partial collapse of the Hotel Dos Continentes in Penonomé. Reports indicated that the hotel appeared as "temporarily closed" on Google, although this information has not been officially confirmed.

In addition, the quake impacted several significant buildings, such as the San Juan Bautista Cathedral in Penonomé. Images and videos shared on social media show the deteriorating state of the structures and moments of panic among the population during the seismic event, which was also felt in Panama City and in several locations in Colombia.

The quake was followed by more than 46 aftershocks, one of which registered a magnitude of 6.6. The emergency triggered evacuations in high-risk areas and caused issues with the water supply, leaving several towns without electricity and affecting potable water facilities.

Authorities and technical services are conducting inspections of the damaged buildings, with reports of injuries to at least 27 people as a result of the earthquake.

The earthquake challenged the resilience of some seismic-resistant constructions, with reports of collapses and debris in the streets complicating the situation. Videos show bridge cables vibrating during the quake, indicating the intensity of the tremor.

As authorities begin the process of cleanup and assessment, the public awaits more official information regarding the damages and the relief measures that will be implemented in response to this emergency.
