Lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella officially assumed the office of president of Colombia last Friday in Cali. At a ceremony attended by presidents from other Latin American countries and high-ranking military officials, the new president pledged a firm fight against drug trafficking.

During his inaugural speech, de la Espriella, a 48-year-old political novice and ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, announced his intention to restore order in the country. He stated that his administration will be dedicated to combating gang violence and drug trafficking, seeking to regain security in Colombia.

The inauguration marks the beginning of de la Espriella's term, who replaces outgoing President Gustavo Petro. This government transition has elicited reactions from various sectors of Colombian society, some of which bear painful memories of past violence.

The new president has committed to implementing a zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking, emphasizing that his government will focus on regaining control over Colombian territory affected by the growth of illegal coca crops and related violence.

De la Espriella expressed his intention to carry out a full support for...
