Actor Imran Khan Ordered to Leave India Following Protest Participation
Imran Khan faces deportation from India after engaging in an anti-CEC protest, raising questions about foreign nationals' rights to participate in political activities.

Bollywood actor Imran Khan has been instructed to leave India by October 28 after his involvement in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Mumbai on October 10. The demonstration took place at August Kranti Maidan, where protesters demanded Kumar's resignation. This action has been initiated following a complaint lodged by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who argued that Khan's foreign citizenship raised legal concerns regarding his participation in the protest.
Khan, believed to hold US citizenship and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, was detained at the protest site along with over 400 others. According to reports, Indian authorities view participation in political protests by foreign nationals as a potential violation of immigration laws.
The legal basis for action against Khan stems from Section 7 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, which allows for such measures against foreign citizens engaging in unauthorized political activities. Reports indicate that Khan is being deported on account of breaching these regulations.

In a statement, Somaiya asserted that Khan's actions warranted scrutiny due to his status as a foreign national. Following the issuance of the notice to leave, Khan has appealed to the Bombay High Court against this order, challenging the decision made by the authorities.
OCI cardholders like Khan possess certain privileges under Indian law, but they are still considered foreign nationals and must adhere to the legal framework governing their activities in India. This situation raises broader questions about the rights of OCI cardholders and foreign citizens engaging in political expressions within the country.
The controversy surrounding Khan's deportation has sparked discussions about the differing treatment of international figures involved in political events, with references made to the support of other individuals who have engaged in similar activities without facing similar consequences. The continued unfolding of events remains under scrutiny as legal proceedings proceed.
