The 2026 Asian Games commenced on September 19 in Nagoya, Japan, with an elaborate opening ceremony attended by Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, the Olympic Council of Asia president Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, and International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry. The event marks the first time Japan has hosted the Asian Games in 32 years and will run until October 4, 2026.

In light of accommodation issues, the organizing committee has decided to forgo plans for a traditional Athletes' Village. Instead, alternative lodging options have been established, including a chartered cruise ship and shipping-container style huts, as reported by Rappler.

Despite higher than anticipated costs, the Aichi prefecture is optimistic about the economic benefits the Games could generate, estimating trillions of yen in potential growth. Originally budgeted significantly lower, the budget has more than tripled, according to CNA.

The Asian Games is recognized as the second most critical multi-sport event after the Summer Olympic Games, a fact highlighted by The Independent. This year's Games not only feature competitions across various sports but also serve as a qualifying platform for the 2028 Olympic Games.

The Games have encountered a series of logistic challenges leading up to the opening, which has been described as troubled by several sources, including Free Malaysia Today. Complaints from athletes and officials regarding accommodation and transport issues have arisen, prompting organizers to address these concerns during the ceremony.

The Games are poised to showcase global sports stars and promising new talents, uniting participants under a theme of solidarity and cultural celebration, especially as Japan aims to portray its cultural heritage throughout the event, as noted by CNA.
