At Least 30,000 Heat Deaths in Europe Since Summer Began 2026
According to the monitoring platform EuroMomo, at least 30,000 additional people have died in Europe during the heatwaves of summer 2026.

In the summer of 2026, characterized by intense heatwaves, at least 30,000 additional people have died in Europe, reports the monitoring platform EuroMomo. The estimate is based on preliminary figures and was made by a network supported by the EU health agency ECDC and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The impact of the heat was especially devastating between mid-July and mid-August, during which Europe saw over 32,000 additional deaths. These figures highlight the severe health consequences associated with extreme temperatures.

An analysis by the AFP agency also notes 33,000 deaths in just eight countries, including Austria. These data emphasize the regional differences in the incidence of heat-related deaths and the varying intensity of the heatwaves.
Although EuroMomo does not publish a detailed breakdown by individual countries, the figures illustrate the seriousness of the situation in Europe. Public and health authorities are called upon to take measures to mitigate the effects of extreme heat.
