Brazilian court prohibits Meta from collecting press content to train AI
The São Paulo court has decided to bar Meta from gathering content from media outlets to train its artificial intelligence systems.

On Tuesday (3rd), the São Paulo court prohibited Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, from using bots to collect news articles, photos, videos, and other content from media outlets affiliated with three industry associations. This decision is seen as a victory for the media organizations that criticized the terms imposed by the company.
According to reports, the decision was made following a lawsuit filed by press associations that claimed Meta was requiring the free concession of content, which contradicts the interests of media outlets. The court established an injunction that prevents the implementation of these terms, which were set to come into effect on November 20.
The measure has been widely reported and described as a significant step in a context where other jurisdictions are also facing similar issues related to the use of copyrighted content for training artificial intelligence models.

The Brazilian court's ruling is notable for being one of the first in the world to favor a coalition of media against Meta's demands regarding the use of press content. The court acknowledged the potential impact that the indiscriminate collection of information could have on the media sector.
Representatives of the press associations celebrated the decision, claiming it demonstrates the need to protect copyright and the integrity of journalistic content. They also highlighted the crucial role of the judiciary in regulating the relationships between large technology companies and traditional media organizations.
This ruling is expected to have repercussions in discussions about the regulation of digital content use and the protection of creators' rights in an increasingly technology-dominated world.
