Cameroon's President Paul Biya returned to Yaoundé on Thursday evening, ending a 74-day absence that raised concerns about his health. His extended stay abroad has also reignited debates over institutional inertia within the state.

Although the presidency has not made any official announcement regarding his return, several sources had already indicated that the Head of State was coming back from Geneva, Switzerland, this week. Preparations for his return intensified in the hours leading up to his landing in Yaoundé.

Paul Biya, 93, has been in power in Cameroon since 1982 and is regarded as one of the longest-serving leaders in the world. His prolonged absence fueled speculation within the country regarding his ability to fulfill presidential duties and effectively lead the nation.

Journalists from Agence France-Presse confirmed his arrival at Yaoundé airport, where he was welcomed by government officials and a crowd of supporters. Despite the absence of official announcements, various media had anticipated his return this week.

In recent months, President Biya has frequently stayed in Switzerland for reasons that have not always been clearly communicated to the public. However, his return after such a long absence, alongside speculation about his health, has sparked considerable interest among the Cameroonian populace.

The health of President Biya and his frequent trips abroad have raised questions among his critics, who doubt his ability to lead the country as Cameroon faces internal challenges, particularly regarding security and governance. These uncertainties about his health and leadership continue to fuel public debate in Cameroon.
