Hundreds of people have camped since Saturday at Puerta del Sol in Madrid, demanding that the government take effective action against evictions. This mobilization, organized by the Tenants' Union, arises in response to the situation of Maricarmen, an 87-year-old woman recently evicted after two generations in her home, generating strong feelings of indignation among the population.

The Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has promised that his administration is working against the clock to approve a housing decree that includes measures against evictions. During a rally in Madrid, he addressed Maricarmen, indicating that efforts are underway to resolve the housing crisis.

For its part, the City Council of Madrid has urged the Government Delegation to restore normalcy in Sol, expressing surprise and discontent over the management of the situation and accusing the government of neglecting its duties. The Community of Madrid also criticized the Executive for its lack of response to this crisis.

Sánchez has called on parliamentary groups to make a final effort to validate the decree that will be presented on Tuesday at the Council of Ministers.

He suggested that the proposed measures, such as protection against evictions and housing assistance, are a matter of humanity and not ideology, though he avoided directly mentioning the camp in Sol.

The protest has attracted the attention of thousands of citizens, who have expressed their support for the Tenants' Union, highlighting the importance of making the housing crisis visible. The organizers of the camp have encouraged demonstrators not to let this situation be considered normal.

The government hopes that the new decree, which will be debated on Tuesday, will gain validation in Congress and be implemented swiftly to alleviate the state of emergency in the housing sector. This initiative aims to address the demands of a population affected by rising evictions and pressure in the real estate market.
