Canada and the United States were unable to reach an agreement, resulting in the imposition of a 50% tariff on Canadian products. This measure will affect goods worth $20 billion and could escalate trade tensions between the two nations, which have an annual trade exchange of $880 billion.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer reported that Ottawa did not accept the treaty under the terms proposed earlier in the week. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum defended the swift renewal of the USMCA trade agreement in an effort to maintain trade cooperation in the region.

Negotiations between Canada and the United States continued until Friday, but ultimately no consensus was reached. This has led to heightened trade tensions, as Canada has threatened retaliation in response to the implementation of tariffs.

The USMCA, which includes Canada, Mexico, and the United States, is a key agreement for trade among the three countries. The statement in defense of the renewal of this treaty suggests the leaders' intent to advance their trade relations despite current challenges with the United States.

On the other hand, the context of these negotiations is complex, as they occur in an environment of economic and political uncertainty for the involved countries, which seek to secure their mutual trade interests.

As deadlines for implementing the new tariffs approach, the parties involved may reconsider their positions to avoid escalating economic tensions in the region.
