Chilean President José Antonio Kast announced on Tuesday his country's accession to the Shield of the Americas, an international coalition promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump that seeks to coordinate efforts against organized crime in the region. Chile's participation in this initiative was formalized during a second meeting of the group, where strategies to combat drug trafficking and other transnational criminal activities were discussed.

According to the official statement from the Chilean government, this alliance will enhance cooperation among fifteen countries and facilitate access to information and training for the security forces of member nations. Kast emphasized that the Shield of the Americas operates as a framework for voluntary coordination and does not imply a formal treaty or permission for U.S. military interventions in Chile.

Before this announcement, Chile had been involved in the initiative as an observer. The decision to join fully has generated various reactions both within and outside the country, with opposition members questioning the lack of public debate regarding this commitment and the possible effects on national sovereignty.

The Socialist Party of Chile, among others, expressed concerns about the commitments that accession could entail, suggesting that clarifications should be sought regarding Congressional involvement if obligations similar to a treaty exist. The opposition has voiced worries about the military dimension of the initiative and its impact on Chilean defense policy.

In response to the criticisms, President Kast specified that joining the Shield of the Americas focuses on coordination and information sharing about criminal organizations, without compromising the country's independence. He also called on entrepreneurs to invest in Chile, aiming to strengthen the local economy in the context of the measure.

The Shield of the Americas represents a joint effort by several right-leaning governments in Latin America and the Caribbean to address the challenges posed by organized crime. Chile's accession marks a significant shift in its security policy, moving toward greater collaboration with other countries in the region.
