The Chilean Foreign Ministry announced that it will send a protest note to Argentina due to statements made by Gustavo Javier Valverde, head of the Argentine Air Force, regarding the sovereignty of the Strait of Magellan. Francisco Pérez Mackenna, a Chilean official, emphasized that the passage is "undeniably Chilean."

The decision by the Chilean Foreign Ministry comes in response to Valverde's references about the status of the strait, which has been the subject of historical controversy between the two countries.

For its part, the Argentine Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the bilateral relationship with Chile after the controversy. From Argentina, it was highlighted that its position regarding the Strait of Magellan is based on the Boundary Treaty of 1881 and the Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1984.

This exchange of statements reflects the enduring tensions between Chile and Argentina over territorial sovereignty in this strategic region.
