Concerns about the safety of modular bridges at Jorge Chávez airport
Experts warn of the risk of collapse of the modular bridges due to rising levels of the Rímac River, although the MTC assures preventive measures are being taken.
Recent inspections conducted by El Comercio, in collaboration with an engineering expert, raised alarms about potential damage to the modular bridges providing access to Jorge Chávez International Airport, particularly in the context of a possible rise in the Rímac River associated with the El Niño phenomenon. Additionally, it was warned that a collapse of these structures could isolate the airport, a critical hub for air transport in the country.
In response to these concerns, the Regional Government of Callao (GORE Callao) and the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) stated that they are implementing preventive actions to ensure the safety of the modular bridges. These measures aim to reinforce the infrastructure and ensure continued access to Peru's main airport terminal.
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Rafael Rey, declared that the modular bridges will not collapse, regardless of the magnitude of the rains associated with El Niño. He assured that the structure is designed to withstand adverse conditions and that maintenance work is being carried out in the area to prepare for any eventualities.
Meanwhile, the MTC continues to work on the maintenance and protection of the Rímac River's channel, which is vital for the airport's operations. The actions are aimed at reinforcing the existing infrastructure and ensuring that transit is not disrupted, despite the imminent arrival of the climatic phenomenon.
