Congress approves elimination of 'blouse tax' for international purchases
Brazil's National Congress has approved a measure eliminating the 'blouse tax', making the tax exemption permanent for international purchases up to $50.

Brazil's National Congress approved a provisional measure on Thursday, October 3, that abolishes the so-called 'blouse tax.' The decision was formalized during a plenary session and is an outcome of the government initiative aimed at benefiting consumers in international purchases.
The 'blouse tax' referred to a 20% import tax applied to products purchased from abroad that cost up to $50. The exemption from this tax was initially implemented in May of this year and has now become permanent following approval in Congress.
The proposal was discussed and voted on before the deadline for the provisional measure, which would have expired on September 8 if it had not been approved.

With the new legislation, consumers will be able to make international purchases within this price range without incurring the aforementioned tax, facilitating access to foreign products.
Details of implementation are now awaited, along with how the new regime will impact the import market and consumer habits in Brazil.
