Drone sighting disrupts operations at Hanover Airport

In the early hours of Tuesday, August 11, flight operations at Hanover Airport were temporarily halted due to the sighting of a drone. According to information from broadcaster NDR, the runways and the airspace were briefly closed several times between 3:44 and 5:20 AM.

The disruption in Hanover occurred just days after a similar incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport. During the closures, several flights were delayed, including six passenger flights, and a cargo flight had to be diverted. Reports indicate that the reasons behind the sighting remain unclear.

According to an internal police report cited by the magazine Der Spiegel, the drone and its associated warning devices could not be detected by either the Federal Police or the German air navigation service. The incident raises questions about the technical capabilities of the authorities.

The police state security service has launched an investigation to gather more information about the incident. Airport operations were able to resume in the morning after the situation was clarified, but several questions remain unanswered. Police have not yet commented specifically on possible suspects or motives.

The incidents in Leipzig and Hanover have reignited discussions about security measures at airports. In light of recent events, a review of existing security protocols may be considered.
