Christine Lagarde, the President of the European Central Bank (ECB), has announced that she will resign early from her position. According to a statement from the ECB, Lagarde will step down on February 7, 2027. Her regular term was set to last until the end of October 2027.

The decision was announced on Thursday. Lagarde informed both the ECB Council and the President of the European Council, António Costa, about her upcoming resignation. This comes during a period of economic challenges in many Eurozone countries.

In recent months, there have been repeated speculations about an early resignation from Lagarde. Her departure could give politicians more time to arrange for a successor, particularly in light of the upcoming presidential election in France.

Analysts and observers point out that concerns about far-right movements in some member states of the Eurozone might play a role in Lagarde's decision. The question of succession is seen as urgent, as the impact on future Eurozone monetary policy is significant.

The ECB is currently facing challenges such as sharply rising inflation and nervous financial markets. Lagarde's resignation is being closely watched in this context.

The question of succession is now being discussed early by the heads of state and government of the 21 Euro countries. Various names of potential candidates are already circulating, with a possible appointment of a chief from Germany coming into focus.
