On Sunday, early parliamentary elections took place in Kazakhstan, deemed critical for the hold on power of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Only state-approved parties were allowed to participate, which drew criticism beforehand. The election occurred in the context of a comprehensive constitutional reform intended to strengthen the presidency, various media reported.

The newly founded president's party Adilet played a significant role in the election. According to post-election surveys, Adilet garnered approximately 70 to 72 percent of the votes, as reported by state media. This party emerged from the former ruling party Amanat, which has shaped Kazakhstan's political landscape since the 1990s.

Voter turnout exceeded 74 percent, indicating a certain level of interest in the elections. In this election, four smaller opposition parties also secured seats in parliament, though they are considered largely loyal to Tokayev. They had no opportunity to establish serious competition against the president's party in advance.

The political dynamics in Kazakhstan are influenced by the tension between Russia and the West. This presented an additional challenge for the electoral process. The country's political course reflects efforts to balance these two spheres of influence.

The exclusion criteria for opposition parties raised concerns about democracy and political plurality in the country. While the political landscape remains shaped by authoritarian leadership, the situation continues to be closely monitored by international observers.

The developments from the elections could have long-term implications for political stability in Kazakhstan. The outcome of these elections is expected to significantly influence the president's position and his future government policies.
