An H1N1 outbreak was detected on Sunday at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Veiros care home in Estremoz. Since then, four elderly residents, aged between 89 and 95 years, have died. Although all deaths occurred following the onset of the outbreak, only one case has been confirmed as infected so far.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has determined that an investigation is necessary in connection with these deaths. The Attorney General's Office has been called to examine the circumstances surrounding the outbreak and the fatalities.

In addition to the deaths, three residents of the care home are hospitalized, and about 20 other elderly residents have shown symptoms consistent with influenza. The situation has raised concerns about the health conditions within the institution.

In response to the outbreak, visits to the care home have been suspended and the facilities have undergone a disinfection process. These measures aim to limit the spread of the virus on-site and protect other residents.

The outbreak has generated significant media attention and concern among authorities. Information remains limited regarding how the outbreak spread so rapidly within the institution.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide support to both affected residents and their families. More details about the progress of the investigation and next steps are expected in the coming weeks.
