EU calls on Meta and TikTok to take action against misinformation following Ceuta influx

Following the massive influx of migrants to the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, EU Digital Commissioner Henna Virkkunen urged the operators of social networks Meta and TikTok to combat misinformation more decisively. The migration of tens of thousands of people reportedly occurred in response to alleged reports of a border opening.

The EU Commission has expressed suspicion that fake news on social networks contributed to escalating the situation. Virkkunen stated that this misinformation led to the surge in Ceuta, thereby increasing pressure on the border.

In its appeal to Meta and TikTok, the EU Commission demands active monitoring of the spread of misinformation on social media. This comes in the context of ongoing challenges at the EU's external borders and the need to ensure the integrity of information.

The request comes at a time when the EU is discussing concepts for better regulation of digital platforms. The focus is on the responsibility of companies to enhance protection against harmful and false content.
