Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni delivered her statements to the Senate of the Republic in preparation for the European Council taking place on October 15 and 16. During her address, she addressed the economic difficulties related to rising energy costs, emphasizing the need for a coordinated and rapid response to these challenges.

Meloni underscored that the choices Europe faces are increasingly numerous and complex, particularly in ensuring competitiveness, security, and an active role in the global context. The war in Ukraine continues to be a central theme, with the Italian government remaining steadfast in its support for Kyiv, calling it essential for the defense of European freedom.

The speech included comments on the geopolitical situation, particularly concerning provocations from Putin and stability in the Middle East, which Meloni stated influences all of Europe. She discussed global economic competition and the importance for the European Union to have a well-defined strategy.

Meloni also touched upon the subject of Russian diesel, labeling the choice made by President Trump regarding trade with Russia as risky. She reiterated that the policies proposed by the government should not be interpreted as warmongering, but rather as necessary for Europe's energy security.

At 3:15 PM, Meloni will head to the Chamber of Deputies for additional remarks. Her statements in the Senate were closely followed by members of both chambers, awaiting developments on the decisions that will be made at the upcoming European Council.

Meloni's communications to the Senate were designed as an opportunity to prepare the country for the complex negotiations that will take place in Brussels, where economic stability and the Ukraine conflict will be among the main topics of discussion.
