At the Dutch border, the Rhine has hit a new low record. The water level threatens to drop further upstream to the point where vessels can no longer navigate significant sections of the river.
According to reports, this could lead to serious problems for inland shipping on both the Dutch and German sections of the river. The situation is such that there is a risk the Rhine could split in two, which would significantly limit transport options.
The issues arising from the low water levels are becoming increasingly urgent, especially for shipping that relies on adequate routes and sufficient depth to navigate safely.
