In the Hoge Venen, a severe wildfire is raging, causing significant damage to the peatland. So far, more than 4,200 football pitches have been destroyed. Although the rain has somewhat moderated the situation, it has not fully extinguished the fire, complicating the firefighters' efforts.

According to reports from Het Nieuwsblad and Gazet van Antwerpen, the firefighters were able to rescue at least one capercaillie during their firefighting efforts. This bird species is already critically endangered in this country, and the ongoing fire has raised concerns about its survival.

The Liège authorities view the rescue of the capercaillie as good news, given the vulnerability of the small population. The bird was found in the middle of the peatland affected by the fire.
