Flávio Bolsonaro cancels participation in Globo TV debate
Senator Flávio Bolsonaro withdrew from the presidential debate on Globo TV, leading to its cancellation due to judicial interventions.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a candidate for the Liberal Party (PL), announced his withdrawal from the presidential debate scheduled for Thursday night (1st) on Globo TV. The decision was communicated shortly before the event, which was set to be the last debate before the elections taking place next Sunday. This withdrawal followed the confirmed absence of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who chose to give an interview to Flow Podcast instead of participating in the debate.
Globo TV canceled the debate due to these absences and judicial mandates that affected the format of the event. According to reports, a judge from Brazil's Superior Electoral Court prevented the network from showing Lula's empty podium during the debate. Additionally, a judicial ruling prohibited participants from asking questions, leading to allegations of 'undue interference' in press freedom, as reported by several sources.
Renan Santos, another presidential candidate from the Mission party, criticized Flávio Bolsonaro's withdrawal, claiming the senator might have felt intimidated by the prospect of facing Santos in a debate. In a live broadcast on social media, Santos invited Flávio for an informal debate at a bar, expressing frustration over the cancellation of the Globo TV event.

Santos also assessed that both Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro, as the two main candidates, avoided confrontation in the debate, which drew criticisms on social media. Flávio Bolsonaro's brothers, Carlos and Eduardo, also weighed in, using the situation to criticize both the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and President Lula.
On the other hand, former minister Fernando Haddad commented that it seems Flávio withdrew from the debate out of fear of facing Renan Santos. These statements and various reactions to the withdrawal and cancellation of the debate occurred amid a tense electoral environment, with high expectations for the candidates in this final stretch before the elections.
The situation sparked a broader debate about freedom of expression and judicial restrictions on electoral events in Brazil, reflecting the increasing political polarization. The cancellation of the debate and the reasons behind it could have a significant impact on the elections, although the exact details of the repercussions remain unclear.
