Venezuelan former judge María Lourdes Afiuni has been granted full freedom after spending years under house arrest. Her family had requested the closure of the case due to her serious illness.
Afiuni is remembered as one of the first political prisoners under chavismo. Her case, which began 16 years ago, has been cited as an example of the deterioration of judicial independence in Venezuela, where she was tried for a non-existent crime and suffered torture.
