An explosion and subsequent fire at a military base in Wainwright, Alberta, has resulted in the deaths of four soldiers. Premier Mark Carney confirmed the casualty count during a press conference. Additionally, dozens of others have been injured, with nineteen individuals in critical condition.

The explosion reportedly occurred during a military exercise involving live ammunition. According to reports, a gas line was hit, triggering the explosion. This led to a rapidly escalating fire that surprised the soldiers and created a chaotic situation.

An initial report of the incident came in around 4:00 PM. The Canadian outlet Global News initially reported seven fatalities, but this number was later corrected. Premier Carney emphasized that the medical facilities on the base are overwhelmed due to the number of injured.

The fire reportedly originated from a smoldering grass fire that appeared harmless but could unexpectedly flare up due to strong winds. The military had been aware of the grass fire for some time, but its development was not assessed in time.

According to the Minister of Defence, there are no indications that the incident was a terrorist act. The situation on the base remains serious, and emergency services have been deployed to treat the injured and get the fire under control.

The Canadian military base in Wainwright is now the scene of one of the worst peacetime tragedies for the military. Authorities continue to investigate what exactly led to this fatal incident as the public and families of those involved await more information.
