French Senate backs tougher penalties for riot vandalism
The French Senate approved the 'vandals pay' bill, imposing stricter sanctions on those responsible for property damage and expanding government powers over social media.
The French Senate passed and expanded the bill known as the 'vandals pay' law, a legislative response to acts of vandalism that occurred during demonstrations on 17 against the high cost of living.
The bill's main provision establishes civil liability for members of a group that commits vandalism acts, without requiring proof that each individual caused the damage. Civil liability has a maximum value of 10,000 euros.
The law toughens sanctions against those responsible for riots and material damage. At the same time, the Government seeks to expand its powers to restrict social media, combining criminal measures with digital control.
