A French trawler, the Maranello, registered in Saint-Brieuc, sank on Saturday off the coast of Plymouth, England. According to the French Atlantic maritime prefecture, the vessel sent a distress signal due to a problem with its fishing gear.

The sinking occurred late in the day, and although three of the five crew members were rescued by another nearby fishing vessel, two sailors remain missing.

Search operations to locate the two missing sailors were suspended on Sunday evening, according to reports from Le Temps. Maritime authorities and rescue teams were mobilized immediately after the distress signal was raised.

The maritime prefecture specified that the incident triggered a significant search operation, involving various nautical and aerial resources to locate the missing individuals and assess the situation.

The precise circumstances of the sinking are still to be established, but investigations are underway to understand why the Maranello ran into trouble. The trawler was reportedly fishing at the time of the incident, which could explain the technical issues reported.

This tragedy highlights the dangers faced by sailors in the fishing sector, particularly in often turbulent waters like those of the English Channel.
