Late Sunday night into early Monday morning, August 23 to 24, an attack by armed gangs occurred in Kenscoff, a municipality located in the hills above Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Gang members targeted a displaced persons camp situated in a church, resulting in the deaths of approximately 40 individuals, according to reports from several sources, including statements from Kenscoff's mayor, Massillon Jean.

Mr. Jean also stated that some individuals remain missing, heightening fears of an imminent escalation of violence in the area. This attack occurs against a backdrop of gangs trying to strengthen their grip on a region already weakened by turmoil.

The violence in Kenscoff is not an isolated incident but part of a series of similar attacks that have destabilized Haiti. Gangs, active for several months, continue to exert significant pressure on communities and the Haitian government.

In response to this emergency situation, the Haitian government has announced the deployment of military reinforcements to restore security in the Kenscoff area. This deployment aims to protect civilians and restore order following this tragic attack.

Human rights groups and humanitarian organizations have expressed deep concern over this escalation of violence affecting vulnerable populations, particularly the displaced who have suffered from dire living conditions as a result.

The situation in Kenscoff and other regions affected by gang violence calls for heightened attention and immediate actions to protect civilians and restore a climate of security in the country.
