The Government and public sector unions started salary negotiations today. This meeting takes place just a few days before the proposal for the 2027 State Budget is submitted to Parliament.

The negotiations aim to define the salary increases that public employees may receive next year. According to reports, public employees constitute over 14 percent of the employed population in Portugal.

The unions, including FESAP and Frente Comum, have made demands ranging from 95 to 150 euros more in salaries. These claims exceed the multiannual agreement, which includes increases of 60.52 euros or 2.3%.

The meeting is significant in the context of preparing the Budget, which needs to address the salary requests under discussion. The relationship between the unions' proposals and the Government’s response will be a central point in the negotiations.

The salary negotiations are occurring at a time when there is growing expectation regarding how the Government will tackle the issue of salaries in the public administration, especially regarding the budgetary limits faced in the preparation of the new State Budget.

This first meeting initiates a process that could influence the economic conditions of public sector workers in the coming years. The parties involved express the importance of reaching an agreement that satisfies both sides.
