Federal Justice Minister Christine Hubig has proposed a possible amendment to tenancy law to make it easier for tenants to install air conditioning units in their apartments. Currently, tenants do not have a legal right to install an air conditioner. Hubig emphasizes the necessity of creating practical regulations for both parties in this context.

According to Hubig, an adjustment to tenancy law could help improve heat protection for tenants. She points out that there are several obstacles stemming from the existing legal framework. A legal regulation could assist in removing these barriers and provide a clear framework for the installation of air conditioning units.

In addition to air conditioning units, Hubig also addresses the possibility of facilitating the installation of sun blinds. These measures are intended to improve living conditions during heat waves and address rising temperatures.

The Minister stresses that traditional legal policy can make an important contribution to improving the situation for tenants. It is crucial that both tenants and landlords can benefit from the new regulations.

It remains unclear when and in what form proposals for legislative changes will be finalized. Hubig plans to pursue these ideas further and engage with relevant stakeholders to find practical solutions.
