The ceasefire in Oleshky, in Kherson region, came into effect in the early hours of Tuesday, October 27, as had been announced the previous Friday by US first lady Melania Trump. The agreement suspends fighting until November 1, according to reporting by the Observador.

The ceasefire aims to allow the entry of supplies and the removal of mines from roads, so that civilians can leave the city safely. The city has been besieged for three years, with no regular access to food, water, gas or electricity.

Hours before the planned start of the truce, Russia carried out an attack on Kyiv that killed one person and wounded eight, according to news agency SAPO 24. This bombardment occurred after the humanitarian ceasefire had already been scheduled.

Residents of Oleshky face severe shortages of essential resources. The deprivation has been described as so extreme that civilians have resorted to eating grass to survive, according to reporting by RTP.

The localized truce agreement does not represent a general ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. As the Observador reports, a comprehensive truce remains off the table between the two sides.

Mediation of the agreement fell to Melania Trump, who announced it publicly on the Friday before it took effect.
