The Liberal Initiative (IL) has submitted a request in Parliament to hear the Minister of State and Finance, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, regarding the acquisition of a 13.7% stake by the State in the capital of REN (Redes Energéticas Nacionais). This request follows an announcement by the Prime Minister, who advocates for the State's re-entry into the company.

The party, led by Mariana Leitão, expressed concerns about the operation, stating that it could lead to the "sacrifice of taxpayers' money in an unconsidered manner." IL questions the Government’s energy strategy and its financial impact on citizens.

For the Liberal Initiative, one of the most problematic issues is the strategy adopted by the Government to reduce energy prices, which, according to IL, could have negative effects on the market. The liberals warned of the possibility of a drop in REN's shares following the announcement of state re-entry.

IL argues that the State's intervention in REN should be carefully analyzed, as it may have significant consequences for the economy and consumers. The party maintains that public management of such assets must be transparent and responsible, thereby protecting the public interest.

In addition to the request for a hearing with the minister, IL also criticized how the operation is being conducted, highlighting the need for a deeper debate on the country's energy policy. The liberals stated that current decisions must take into account long-term financial sustainability.

IL's request to hear Joaquim Miranda Sarmento is now awaiting a response from Parliament, which will have to deliberate on its occurrence. Both IL and other political groups will be able to discuss the impacts of this decision in a future meeting within the framework of financial reliability committees.
