The International Criminal Court (ICC) has won the Sakharov Prize awarded by the European Parliament. The announcement was made on Thursday by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola during a session in Strasbourg. According to European sources, the institution was honoured with this award.

The Sakharov Prize has been awarded annually since 1988 by the European Union to individuals and organisations defending human rights. The prize is named in honour of Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov.

The International Criminal Court currently faces sanctions and pressure from the United States. The prize comes at a time of international political tension surrounding the institution.

The ICC is the principal international court responsible for investigating and prosecuting serious crimes against humanity. The European distinction represents formal recognition of its role in this area.

The announcement ceremony took place in Strasbourg, seat of the European Parliament, where President Metsola formalised the decision before the assembled MEPs.

The award to the International Criminal Court underscores Europe's commitment to human rights and international justice, regardless of the external pressures the institution faces.
