Israel has announced the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem following the UK's decision to impose trade sanctions on goods from Israeli settlements. This action comes as Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar claims that the UK is 'systemically working against the state of Israel.'

The sanctions by the UK are aimed at Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which the British government has accused of contributing to ethnic cleansing against Palestinian communities. According to reports, British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has led an international push to hold Israel accountable for its actions related to these settlements.

In a statement, President Isaac Herzog of Israel criticized the UK sanctions, labeling them as misguided and suggesting that Britain is positioning itself on the 'wrong side of history.'

The closure will affect the accreditations of British diplomats, who are required to leave within a week. This move signifies a notable escalation in diplomatic tensions between the UK and Israel over the contentious issue of settlements in Palestinian territories.

The British Liberal Democrats have reported that they have been granted an urgent question in the Commons regarding the situation, reflecting the significance of these developments in UK political discourse. The urgency points to growing concerns among British lawmakers about the implications of bilateral relations with Israel.

Furthermore, the Foreign Office is expected to provide a response to the matter in the House of Commons, with a minister set to address questions about the UK's approach and the recent statements from Israeli officials. This developing situation continues to unfold as diplomatic interactions are impacted by these sanctions.
