The Home Minister of Keralam has directed the Crime Branch to look into recent reports suggesting that fugitive Sukumara Kurup may still be alive. These claims were fueled by a recent television broadcast that featured an image purportedly showing Kurup in Brunei, where it was reported he may be hiding.

Crime Branch Additional Director General of Police H. Venkatesh stated that the police would investigate these latest claims regarding Kurup's whereabouts. Venkatesh emphasized that the investigation will remain open until conclusive evidence establishes Kurup's death, despite the passage of time since he became a fugitive.

The renewed interest in Kurup's case arises after claims made by a retired police officer, which suggested that the alleged photograph was indeed of Kurup, thus stirring public interest in this long-standing fugitive mystery. However, there are questions about the authenticity of the image and the identity of the individual depicted.

The case of Sukumara Kurup highlights complex legal questions regarding the presumption of death and the possibility of trials in absentia. As the investigation unfolds, legal experts may consider how these principles apply to cases involving long-absconding fugitives.
