King Charles III has made it clear in an official letter that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan are considered private citizens upon their return to the United Kingdom. This follows various inquiries made to different institutions regarding the couple's status, as reported by several media outlets and confirmed by sources close to the monarch.

The king emphasized that Harry and Meghan are no longer regarded as "working royals," meaning they are no longer active members of the royal family. This decision reflects the situation that has been in place since the couple stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

While Harry (41) and Meghan (45) remain family members, they are not undertaking any official duties. The royal status of the couple has been a recurring subject of speculation and questions since their move back to the UK at the end of August.

In his letter, which was reportedly addressed to government and military officials, King Charles specified that Harry and Meghan's activities are strictly private concerning their role within the monarchy. Public inquiries necessitated such a clarification.

Harry and Meghan have reacted to the statement as being "a little surprised," which may indicate the ongoing tensions that have persisted since their withdrawal. Reactions to this sustainability of status suggest that, despite their return home, the relationship with the royal family remains strained.

It remains unclear whether the couple, who lives in the UK with their children Archie and Lilibet, will continue to receive royal protection, and this issue was not addressed in the letter.
