Kyiv came under renewed missile attack overnight, according to multiple news outlets. The bombardment occurred after negotiations between Russia and the United States held on Wednesday in St Petersburg, which had the stated aim of bringing an end to the conflict.

The attack came within hours of the talks and of US President Donald Trump declaring that the end of the war had never been closer. The sequence of events contrasts sharply with the diplomatic objectives that are said to have motivated the negotiations.

Simultaneously, Ukraine responded with drone strikes despite the ongoing negotiations. Military activity from both sides continued during this period.

Oil markets recorded mixed movement on the same day. December Brent crude closed slightly higher at 0.03 per cent, at 108.82 dollars per barrel, while December WTI fell 0.68 per cent to 97.15 dollars per barrel.

The negotiations in St Petersburg represented an attempt at dialogue between the powers involved in the Ukrainian conflict, but had no immediate effect in halting military operations.

The pattern of resumed bombardment following diplomatic talks again marked the dynamics of the conflict, with both sides maintaining military activity regardless of negotiation efforts.
