Residents fled their homes as smaller tremors followed the initial earthquake. Police and fire department personnel worked to rescue people and provide temporary shelter to those who had lost their homes. Rescue teams were putting up tents to accommodate residents displaced by the quake.

According to China's national broadcaster CCTV, the earthquake was the strongest to hit the region in the last five years. Search and rescue efforts were ongoing following the disaster.
