Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has announced that auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers will have a full year to learn the Marathi language. This decision comes amidst recent enforcement actions and protests by drivers who sought additional time to improve their language skills for better communication in Mumbai.

Fadnavis stated that no action will be taken against drivers for lacking proficiency in the official state language until the completion of this learning period. Drivers' representatives have indicated their support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of learning functional Marathi for those working in the region.

The government is providing access to Marathi language classes and support materials to assist drivers in this endeavor. This initiative aims to address the concerns raised by the drivers regarding the language requirement and its implications for their livelihoods.

In response to the government's announcement, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has issued a warning to auto and taxi drivers. The party, led by Raj Thackeray, indicated that they may take action if the drivers do not comply with the new language requirement after the extension period ends.

The developments highlight ongoing tensions between driver organizations and political groups regarding language proficiency and the rights of workers in the transportation sector.
