Meloni writes to von der Leyen for greater economic flexibility
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced her intention to write to Ursula von der Leyen to request more flexibility due to inflation.

During a video link at the "Beyond the Roots" event, Giorgia Meloni announced her intention to send a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission. The request focuses on the need for greater economic flexibility, particularly due to rising inflation in Italy, which currently stands at 4.2%.
Meloni emphasized the importance of addressing this issue in the upcoming Ecofin meetings and the Council of the European Union, suggesting that support for families and businesses is necessary. In this context, the government's goal is to unlock structural resources to tackle the economic challenges related to inflation and rising energy prices.
According to Sky TG24, Meloni stated that she intends to engage again with the European Commission to consider the rise in inflation in the calculations of budgetary regulations and the permitted deficit.

In response to Meloni's letter, a spokesperson for the European Union indicated that it has been received but also stressed that the EU has already granted greater flexibility in the past. Furthermore, it was clarified that the letter announced by the Prime Minister had not yet reached Brussels.
Although Meloni has expressed her viewpoint, the EU noted that temporary measures, such as those being discussed in collaboration with Prague, are already in place to address the impact of energy prices. This suggests that there may already be solutions in the works to mitigate the effects of rising costs.
The debate on how to manage inflation and related economic measures in Europe continues, with Meloni seeking to express Italy's needs in a context of greater collaboration among member states.
